If you can believe that much time has passed, Bayonetta is 15 years old now, and PlatinumGames has teased… something!
]]>The Nier series is hitting its 15th anniversary next year, and while a new game hasn't been confirmed just yet, the games' producer might have teased something for 2025.
]]>If you've been glued to the Paris Olympics as of late, and consider yourself a keen fan of action RPGs from the past few years, you ears probably perked up during the artistic swimming last night. That's because that the Japanese team competing in that event decided to pair their performance with a certain song from Nier Automata of all things.
]]>Nier: Automata Ver 1.1a, the anime adaptation of the beloved Square Enix game, is finally coming back this July.
]]>It feels somewhat hard to believe that it's been seven years since Nier: Automata released, and yet somehow that time has gone by in the blink of an eye. I think the more confusing thing is the fact that Square Enix somehow hasn't let Yoko Taro and co make a fully fledged sequel, despite the fact it's managed to sell 8,000,000 copies to date, even resulting in an amped-up remaster of the original game. Sure, there's the mobile game, but that's dead now, so I can't help but feel that there's a bit of a Nier-shaped hole in my heart at the moment.
]]>Ok. So, Yoko Taro and a couple of the other key people behind the NieR games have cheekily teased a new project that they're working on together, very much leaving it up in the air as to whether the thing is related to NieR or not. Seriously, the quote even has the word 'laughs' in it in brackets, who knows what they're cooking.
]]>Yu Miyake, a member of Square Enix who has overseen the development of a number of Dragon Quest games since joining the publisher all the way back in 1992, is reportedly set to step down from his position as a producer on the series, after some delays in the creation of the next entry in it.
]]>As long as Yoko Taro isn't pulling our leg, it's increasingly looking like another Nier game is on the way. Whether that's Nier 3, or Nier 4 if you count Reincarnation (and you should, because Taro himself certainly seems to), no one knows just yet, though the recent hints suggest the word "repent" could fit somewhere in there. That's all fine and dandy, potentially exciting even, I love Nier! But (of course there's a but), the thing I'd really love to see most from Taro, is a return to his lesser known but equally interesting series, Drakengard.
]]>After a long wait of no news, it's finally been confirmed that the Nier: Automata anime is finally returning some time this year.
]]>You love 2B, we love 2B. Who doesn't love 2B? Well, if you consider yourself a fan of the excellent action RPG Nier Automata, and fancy giving a brilliant fighting game some love, then you'll be happy to hear that 2B has made herself a home in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising. She is downloadable right now, as a brand-new DLC character.
]]>Granblue Fantasy Relink has shot past one million units sold, just under two weeks after its launch. It marks yet another massive sales milestone at a time when various video games, across different genres, are flying off the digital shelves.
]]>Am I getting old? I think I might be, which isn't a fun thought; the reason I mention it is because I keep thinking about PS2 games at the moment, and reminiscing about "the good old days" is something that only old people should do. It's just, a lot of big video games don't really capture me the way they used to. They're either just way too long, bloated, or lifeless, and often don't hold a candle to anything in the incredible library the PS2 has. Granblue Fantasy: Relink, on the other hand, while not perfect, is none of those things I've just mentioned, and honestly reminds me a lot of some of the best PS2 games out there - even if that isn't always for the better.
]]>The start of the year has been pretty stacked with big JRPGs like Persona 3 Reload and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, but surprisingly, it's Granblue Fantasy: Relink that's coming out on top.
]]>How do you review a game that is essentially one giant ad for another game entirely? That's kind of what Granblue Fantasy: Relink feels like to me, the first fully-fledged, 3D, RPG take on Cygames' long-running mobile gacha game. It's a difficult question to answer, especially when – spoiler alert – Relink is actually pretty good! And it's even harder to answer when the ad kind-of works.
]]>After a long development period, Granblue Fantasy: Relink is finally out next month, and to build up to its launch, its developer has released its anime adaptation for free.
]]>PlatinumGames' Apple Arcade exclusive title World of Demons is having its service ended, and is being completely delisted January 18.
]]>With Hideki Kamiya no longer working at PlatinumGames, the Bayonetta series will likely move on without him - and he might be taking his ideas for more games "to the grave."
]]>We haven't had a full on sequel to 2017's Nier Automata just yet, but the series' producer has promised more is on the way.
]]>Video games and excessive violence go together like cheese and crackers. Laurel and Hardy. Beer and nuts. Bacon and, er, rolls. Playstation exclusives and the concept of mediocrity. We love simulated violence here at VG247, but not the real stuff, so when it came to the task of deciding which notably ultraviolent game is the best one of all we decided to solve our differences via the medium of a weekly panel show format that goes out on all the major podcast platforms and YouTube. Conveniently, we already had one, which is this show: The Best Games Ever Podcast, which you're probably listening to now if you're reading this.
]]>Hideki Kamiya is unemployed, and like many unemployed guys with a passion for video games, he has created a YouTube channel.
]]>PlatinumGames has announced that Hideki Kamiya, director of games like Bayonetta, is leaving the developer next month.
]]>The Wii U was a strange console. The wild success of the original Wii was never going to be an easy act to follow, but it’s pretty plain to see how this oddball console was the foundation of Nintendo’s latest bit of hardware, the Switch.
]]>The best story-based games are ageless. While gameplay can become clunky with the passing of time, an enthralling narrative is just as gripping whether it came out in 2004 or 2024.
]]>It turns out that Final Fantasy 16 got a helping hand from both PlatinumGames and the studio behind Kingdom Hearts during its development.
]]>Welcome to the Best Games Ever show Episode 53: the best game with a terrible name.
]]>It’s wild to think that 10 years ago today, I got Metal Gear Rising Revengeance through the door. I sat down at my Xbox 360 and played through the entire game that day. I couldn’t put it down. I got stuck at the final boss – because I was a cocky guy who picked hard for my first playthrough – but defeated him the next morning. At this point in my life I was a fresh fan of Metal Gear. I had played through the entire saga the year before and it took over my life, remaining my favourite series in all of media.
]]>Rumours of a Metal Gear Solid announcement have been rampant, and they show no signs whatsoever of slowing down. As is typically the case with Konami, there’s been radio silence on the topic of whether we’ll be seeing a new Metal Gear game anytime soon.
]]>An all-new trailer for the NieR: Automata Ver1.1a anime has been revealed by Square Enix and Aniplex, finally confirming the show's release date for us. While we already expected the anime to arrive in January 2023, this new trailer has confirmed that fans only have until January 7 to wait for the show to begin airing.
]]>Turns out the recently revealed Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon had a playable teaser hidden within Bayonetta 3 all along.
]]>A new Bayonetta game is coming to Nintendo Switch, and it tells the origin tale of or favorite witch.
]]>I’m sure a fair-few people have read this title and rolled their eyes. Really, I can’t blame you; there's a reason QTEs are hated. However, I’m here to convince you that when used correctly, every game developer's little guilty pleasure can actually be fantastic.
]]>Bayonetta 3 took quite a while to come out as we all know, and that's partially because the game was originally scoped as a semi-open world game.
]]>There is a lot to do in Bayonetta 3 – whether it's the main story, the bonus content you unlock once you've finished the game, the mini-games you can unlock en route, or just the various difficulties you can play the title on, PlatinumGames' latest title has a lot to offer. But there's one thing you may notice as you play that isn't very well explained in-game: Bewitchments.
]]>“Look, it’s very simple”, said Jim. “Review scores aren’t a flat scale, they’re all sort of, rubbery and compartmentalised.”
]]>In Bayonetta 3 you will collect Umbran Tears of Blood from three witch-y familiars as you prgoress through the game; Cats, Frogs, and Crows. Depending on how you play, you may find each of these easier to collect than others. The vast majority of main levels in the game will have all three of these creatures.
]]>If you’ve been on this site over the past week, you’ll know I’ve been banging the drum for Bayonetta 3 pretty hard. Some story niggles aside (who plays this for the story!?), Bayonetta 3 is a nigh-perfect game. The action, the combat, the over-the-top humor – it all comes together to make a game that is right up there with Platinum’s best.
]]>Mario, Kirby, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Samus Aran, Bayonetta. The witch has made it to the upper echelons of the Nintendo elite with Bayonetta 3, and any doubt about her status as mascot character for the House of Mario has been dissolved in a cauldron, fizzing with demon blood, keratin, and rocket fuel. With the chant of an incantation and the click of a delicately gloved finger, Bayonetta 3 secures the Umbran Witch as a Nintendo icon – maybe even usurping some of the more… family-friendly… faces in the roster in the process. Bayonetta 3, Switch owners, is essential.
]]>Former Bayonetta voice actor Hellena Taylor has elaborated on her original series of videos and claims regarding her absence from Bayonetta 3’s lead VO role, which appears to confirm findings made by Jason Schrier at Bloomberg last week. This includes confirmation that she was indeed offered $15,000 initially, rather than the originally implied $4,000 figure.
]]>Hellena Taylor, the original voice actor of PlatinumGames' Bayonetta, has called for a boycott of the game after alleging she received an "insulting" pay offer for the role.
]]>PlatinumGames hasn’t exactly had the hottest streak lately. Babylon’s Fall was an exemplary lesson in how not to do a service game, it lost the job of making Granblue Fantasy: Relink to Cygames back in 2019, and even Astral Chain failed to really get the traction you’d see from keystone series like Bayonetta or Nier. The studio, regrettably, has been stuck in a rut.
]]>Babylon's Fall might have been a failure, but PlatinumGames still intends to have a focus on live service games.
]]>Jennifer Hale has been confirmed as the new voice of Bayonetta in Bayonetta 3.
]]>Admittedly, my expectations for NieR: Automata on the Nintendo Switch were quite low. I love Nintendo’s handheld more than most, picking it up near enough every day, but I’m also quite accustomed to it’s limited performance capabilities (as anyone that picked up Dark Souls on the platform will tell you).
]]>A new trailer forBayonetta 3 was shown during today's Nintendo Direct.
]]>PlatinumGames has announced this morning that development will not continue on Babylon's Fall, and that the game's live services are being terminated. This also means, given that Babylon's Fall is an online-only game, that no one will be able to play it once servers are shutdown.
]]>Nintendo and PlatinumGames have announced a release date for the long-awaited Bayonetta 3.
]]>Some new servers recently went live on the European data centre for Final Fantasy 14. Usually, this wouldn’t be hugely newsworthy, but with the reveal of the name of one of these servers - Raiden - a wave of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance memes have emerged as players of the popular MMORPG rushed to create new characters referencing the legendary Platinum Games action title.
]]>As part of today's third-party-focused Nintendo Direct, Square Enix announced that Nier Automata is in development for the Switch. This won't be a cloud-based version as we've been seeing recently, and will instead run natively on the console.
]]>Babylon's Fall is a video game that came out this year, a little over two months ago in fact. It's developed by PlatinumGames, and published by purveyor of hits Square Enix. It's completely fine if you never heard of it until this moment (or if you forgot it existed), because that seems to also be true for the majority of Steam users.
]]>When most people picture the Wii U, they remember a Fisher Price-looking disappointment. Yet, for action gaming connoisseurs, it’s the console that Trojan Horsed the best game of 2014 into our lives. I am, of course, talking about the breath-takingly bizarre Bayonetta 2.
]]>The Nintendo Switch has become a happy new home for many a Wii U title that failed to find huge success on that struggling machine - but one of the titles that remains left behind is Star Fox Zero, that machine’s iffy-but-fun entry in the Star Fox series.
]]>PlatinumGames has plenty of upcoming content in store for Babylon's Fall players.
]]>After rocket-sliding toward an enemy, you kickflip off them to chain multiple mid-air headshots. Then, you toss a grenade at a sniper nest, vaulting over cover to detonate the explosive with a well-timed bullet. An answering rocket barrage sends you sliding along the ground as missiles fly overhead, swapping out to a sniper rifle to pull off a trickshot in transit. All of which takes place in slow-motion, of course.
]]>PlatinumGames is keen to work on Scalebound again, according to studio president Atsushi Inaba.
]]>Along with a new trailer dropping tonight for Babylon's Fall, a release date for the PlatinumGames title was announced during The Game Awards.
]]>Babylon's Fall has existed in this weird state where many PlatinumGames fans are aware it's the studio's next big game, but there seems to be hardly any excitement for it. In July, the developer concluded the first of three beta tests for the game.
]]>If you want Bayonetta 3 to come to PlayStation, Xbox or PC – rather than just Nintendo Switch – PlatinumGames' executive director Hideki Kamiya wants you to let Nintendo know.
]]>Announced in 2017, Bayonetta 3 will finally arrive on Switch next year.
]]>The voice actress for Bayonetta made a tweet suggesting she won’t be voicing the flamboyant protagonist in the future. In response to a tweet praising voice actress Hellena Taylor’s performances in the games and saying they can’t imagine the character without her voice, she responded: “Well you might have to.”
]]>In an interview with VGC, Platinum Games studio head Atsushi Inaba said that there’s interest at the studio to revisit the Wii U’s Star Fox Zero for a Switch rerelease. “It’s unfortunate that people aren’t able to play older games because they’re locked out of the platform, so of course if possible we’d like to bring over any of those older titles to the newer platforms.”
]]>Those who signed up to play Babylon's Fall early will soon get their hands on the game.
]]>A new patch for Nier: Automata addresses long-suffered issues and adds support for 4K and HDR.
]]>Another E3, another Bayonetta 3 no-show. It's getting rather depressing.
]]>Closed beta details have been provided for Babylon's Fall.
]]>Platinum Games' action-RPG, Babylon's Fall, is coming to PS5, PS4 and PC. It'll be a live service game, and there will be a PS5 beta soon, Square Enix announced at E3 2021.
]]>Looks like the review bombings on Steam may have worked - Nier: Automata is finally getting a patch.
]]>Square Enix's mistakes with the original PC release of Nier Automata are coming back to haunt it.
]]>After the official Astral Chain website changed the copyright listing last week, PlatinumGames has confirmed longer the IP belongs to Nintendo.
]]>Cygames has re-revealed RPG spin-off Granblue Fantasy: Relink, announcing that the game will now release on PlayStation 5 as well as PlayStation 4.
]]>We're not getting Babylon's Fall news this summer, after all.
]]>Hideo Kamiya's social media is often inundated with questions about the future of the Bayonetta series.
