There's a lot to love about Disco Elysium: the writing, the art style, the philosophy, the branching narrative, the little hole in the middle of space and time, lieutenant Kim Kitsuragi... the list goes on.
]]>It feels like almost ever since Disco Elysium arrived in our lives, it's been linked to behind-the-scenes messiness which, while it's taken various forms and involved different parties, usually follows some similar themes. It's generally quite complex - as they said/this other person said video game drama often is - sometimes litigious, and occasionally really weird, if still clearly worth taking seriously.
]]>We're gradually learning more and more about the bunch of studios that revealed themselves to be developing not quite Disco Elysium successors earlier this month, with the creative director behind Longdue having now offered a bit more info on how it plans to approach its upcoming game.
]]>One of the things that made Summer Eternal stand out from the not quite Disco Elysium successor studio crowd when it was announced was the unique way its developers - the majority of whom are ex-ZA/UM - had gone about setting up its structure.
]]>It's been a pretty depressing year for the games industry, with more layoffs and cutbacks than anyone can remotely justify, as corporate bigwigs still take home huge compensation packages, or waltz into golden parachutes. As much as they can, developers are trying to fight back against this tide of misery, but it's a tough task, as the developers at not quite Disco Elysium sucessor studio Summer Eternal know all too well.
]]>How do you follow-up your work on Disco Elysium, without just making something that's too much like Disco Elysium to be as innovative as Disco Elysium was? It's a hell of a riddle, and also a thing that Summer Eternal, the new studio featuring ex-ZA/UM devs that came with its own manifesto, is grappling with.
]]>“Disco Elysium shaped me as much as I shaped it, and I am eternally grateful for the experience,” Argo Tuulik, the last writer of the original game to depart ZA/UM, tells me.
]]>In case you were living underneath a rock with the insulindian phasmid, a whole bunch of new projects and studios that involve developers who worked on Disco Elysium and look like they could well appeal to people who liked Disco Elysium were announced last week. While they all look interesting, the last one that of these things that popped up like an outbusts from Harry Du Bois' psyche might be the most looks like it might be the most Disco of them all - even coming with its own manifesto.
]]>Nearly five years since the game launched, Disco Elysium has something of a rotten legacy. One of the most acclaimed games of the modern era, the ground-breaking RPG was adored by critics and consumers alike at launch, lauded for its deep RPG systems, its exemplary writing, and for how completely and utterly well-conceived its bleak, miserable world was. I also really, really liked the music.
]]>Following layoffs at ZA/UM earlier this year, some of the developers affected have provided some details about the Disco Elysium spin-off game they were busy working on prior to it being cancelled as part of them being let go. As with all of the Disco Elysium stuff we haven't gotten since the orginal came out, it sounds very cool.
]]>Now we're all basking in the radioactive glow of success coming from Amazon's Fallout TV show, a lot of people are naturally wondering which video game series they might like to see get the Hollywood treatment next. Interestingly, for Dragon Age's former lead writer, the answer isn't, er, Dragon Age.
]]>Please enjoy this week's Best Games Ever Podcast, your Tuesday lunchtime pick-me-up panel show where a bunch of regular guests try to convince me, the host, that their Gaming Opinion is the best one. This week I'm asking the question: what's the best game that's an unofficial adaption of a movie or TV show?
]]>The original story follows:
]]>While studying for my degree I would not – could not – write an article or essay without a buzz on. My first published article was written sloppily around 1AM in my cheap student room with help from Fireball whiskey and Rockstar energy drinks. There's this sweet spot on the verge of drunk, with your heart pumping lava and knee subconciously bopping up and down, where your brain can work miracles. Where I took my first steps towards being the writer I wanted to be. It's an experience video games never quite captured for me. Until I played Disco Elysium.
]]>Another month, another set of PlayStation Plus leaks, this time for the titles that you'll be able to play at the Extra tier.
]]>Humble Bundle has revealed its games for August's Humble Choice subscription.
]]>The best story-based games are ageless. While gameplay can become clunky with the passing of time, an enthralling narrative is just as gripping whether it came out in 2004 or 2024.

]]>The world of Disco Elysium can often be confusing without something to guide you. Owning your own map is a big part of helping with that, so we'll show you how to find one and get the lay of the land.
]]>After a while in Disco Elysium it'll become clear that you have to leave central Martinaise and move into the marshy areas in the West. However, with the water lock that doubles as a bridge apparently broken, it doesn't seem easy. We'll show you how to cross the water lock and get to the fishing village beyond.
]]>After peeling yourself off your hostel room floor in the opening of Disco Elysium, there's several problems straight away. Your head hurts, your shirt is a bit stained, and - oh, yeah - you lost your badge and your gun, you idiot. Clearly the last thing a political hotbed like Martinaise needs is somebody waving around a policeman's firearm or claiming to be a detective when they might not be. Besides, that's your job. We'll show you how to get both items back in our handy guide here, as well as bullets to load into your gun when you get it.
]]>Disco Elysium's semi-realistic approach to time means that there'll be moments where you want to skip ahead to trigger certain events, or hang back and take a while to evaluate your surroundings. We'll explain how time works in Disco Elysium, and how to pass or skip time quickly.
]]>One of Disco Elysium's first tasks turns out to be one of the trickiest: get the victim's hanged body down from the tree you found it in. We take you through the multiple ways to bring it down, as well as how to get past Measurehead, the thug stopping you from getting into the harbor.
]]>After a while in Disco Elysium it will become clear that there's only one more course left to you - make your way to the final possible location of the shooter. We'll show you how to get there, and to the island in the bay.
]]>Disco Elysium's focus on semi-realistic in-game time means that eventually night will roll around and you'll have to rest (even if your mind tortures you with nightmares in the process). We'll show you where to sleep, what it'll cost you, and how you can find a bed for free.
]]>Disco Elysium is a big game, with multiple areas to explore, dozens of tasks and long days in which to conduct your investigation or just explore Martinaise. But how long is it exactly, and how many in-game days are there? We'll go over these basics here.
]]>A big part of Disco Elysium's central mystery is locating Ruby, the red-haired member of the Hardie Boys. We'll show you how to find her, and what you can do to make it easier.
]]>Disco Elysium is certainly a cerebral game, where hunting high-tier loot and min-maxing your stats is a distant second to remembering your own past or saving the city from class war. Still, old habits die hard, and the victim in your murder investigation was wearing a lovely set of ceramic Fairweather T-500 armor before various people came and stole it. We'll show you where you can get all four pieces across the course of the game and complete the "Find All Armor Pieces" task.
]]>Disco Elysium essentially reduces your character to a blank slate in the opening scene, wiping their memory and even their identity in a brain-mangling mixture of drugs, liquor and self-loathing. We'll show you how to use the Thought Cabinet and where to find all the thoughts, rebuilding your personality over the course of the game.
]]>Disco Elysium starts with you lying on the floor of a hostel in a trashed room, your sense of personal identity destroyed and your body trying desperately to recover from the chemical violations inflicted on it. Also, you're only wearing underpants and socks. Before you deal with those larger existential crises, you're going to need to find your clothes and shoes.
