They follow a tried and tested formula of catching and battling Pokemon, nurturing them so they can face even tougher battles and so that you can become the best trainer there ever was. Though, when you grow tired of going from Gym Leader to Gym Leader but still want your Pokemon fix, there are fortunately plenty of Pokemon spin-off games for you to try.

]]>You know Nintendo, and how one of its cornerstone characters is Donkey Kong, who's starred in the DK rap in addition to some video games? Well, it turns out that a bunch of names were proposed for him before the company settled on the iconic monkey moniker we all know him by. One of these was "Kong Dong".

]]>The Sims 3 celebrates the 15th anniversary of its initial release today, and, as someone who excitedly took a fresh copy of the base game with them when they moved into their university halls of residence, allow me to take a break from booking myself in for a hip replacement to look back on one of the most lauded - yet divisive - entries into The Sims franchise.
]]>Gamers got their first taste for catching and battling pocket monsters back in 1996 when Pokemon Red and Green first released. Ever since, Pokemon fans - young and old, far and wide - haven’t been able to get enough of the series, with each game generally amassing more sales than the last, even when they’re riddled with issues. But that’s the thing, Pokemon’s gameplay is just so satisfying, so addictive, that when issues arise, they barely matter as long as there’s new ‘mons and Gym Leaders involved.

]]>Back in the day, Surf was everyone's best-loved HM move. It was the best water move, with high base power and none of the infuriating inaccuracy of Hydro Pump - plus you could teach it to as many Pokemon as you wanted.
]]>Pokemon is one of the few game franchises where fast-travel actually makes sense. Rather than teleporting instantly to where you need to go faster than you can say "ludonarrative dissonance", your character in Pokemon Red and Blue simply hops on the back of their flying Pokemon and soars off into the sunset.
]]>Cut is not just the first hidden machine you gain access to in Pokemon Red and Blue, but one of the handiest. It allows your Pokemon to chop down the small trees and bushes that block useful shortcuts, tempting items and sneaky routes around otherwise required trainer battles.
]]>Snorlax rules, it's just a fact. He's one of the best Generation 1 designs and, thanks to great base stats and strong move pool, he's a fantastic team member for your party as well.
]]>One of the most memorable dungeons in Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow is the Rocket Game Corner, where the otherwise unassuming arcade is secretly run by the nefarious Team Rocket. This is no doubt inspired by how real-life pachinko parlors in Japan are often tied to the Yakuza.
]]>One of the spookiest places in the whole Pokemon franchise is the Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town, where trainers lay the spirits of their departed Pokemon to rest. They have to pitch their pick to our host, Jim, who then decides the winner. But there's a lot of office politics, backstabbing, and meta-gaming going on which makes this mild-mannered panel game fraught with real danger.

]]>Video games and murder are like cheese and crackers. Vic and Bob. The Edinburgh Fringe and disgruntled locals. A classic partnership, but hardly inseparable: though our chief interaction with these virtual worlds is to deal death to their residents, it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, there are thousands of video games out there where you aren't compelled to kill anyone. Or stab them. Or even lightly maim them. Farming simulators, for example, where the only thing resembling violence is the application of combine harvester to corn. Relationship simulators, where the only conflict to be found is that between heart and head. Or Assassin's Creed 3, where you tend to just kill British colonisers, which most people agree is fair game.

]]>It's kind of difficult to accurately describe how impressive a game The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom actually is. Personally I find it increasingly rare that I actually play a triple-A game that delivers on the promise of its scope, but Nintendo's latest outing has successfully done so. There is just… so much to do, and so much of it is worth doing. Side quests feel like worthwhile endeavours rather than meandering distractions, the new abilities are busted beyond belief, and the main story itself hooked me quickly. Obviously, there's an easy argument to be made that this is the game of the year. But I just hope that whatever Zelda game Nintendo makes next, it's nothing like Tears of the Kingdom.

Persona Central (thanks Destructoid) reported that, according to a statement released from Atlus via Japanese games mag Famitsu, Shin Megami Tensei 5 has sold over 800,000 copies since launch.
