Over the last few years, the retro floodgates have opened - and it’s honestly never been a better time to be an elderly gamer. If you want to relive the glories of your childhood there are now numerous options from a wide variety of companies - but this latest contender might be one of the most exciting yet.
]]>Analogue is back at it again. The company that pitches itself as the sort of Rolls Royce of retro gaming is back with its latest piece of hardware – and it’s arguably the most niche offering yet.
]]>As a certified old man, at least in video game industry years (which aren’t that dissimilar to dog years), it should come as no surprise that I love a retro handheld. Everyone in their thirties does.
]]>The life of a gaming mascot is hard work. Just ask Sonic the Hedgehog - who has been in well over 100 games – or, depending on how you count it, double that, or more. He’s a hard working chap.
]]>If you’ve been after a high-end retro gaming solution and been slightly put off by stock issues, one major supplier may finally be resolving them… maybe.
]]>After successful run-outs with the NES, SNES, Mega Drive, and Game Boy, neo-retro console creator Analogue is finally going 64-bit.
]]>Welcome to the Best Games Ever show Episode 64: The best game you love despite itself.
]]>The anthropomorphic gecko, Gex, is returning to PC and modern consoles, with the entire original trilogy being rebuilt in Limited Run Games’ Carbon Engine.
]]>Additional classic games were added to the SEGA Genesis – Nintendo Switch Online library overnight and are playable right now.
]]>The Game Boy Color released in 1998, and today marks the 52nd birthday of McDonald’s furry, purple mascot Grimace. So, what has McDonald’s decided to do with this information? Whip up some purple patties in his honour? No, the fast-food chain has done one better than that by releasing a video game all about Grimace's Birthday shenanigans for the Game Boy Color.
]]>Is Square Enix on the cusp of a new golden age, or is it still swimming upstream? Right now, it’s honestly hard to tell.
]]>Compared to most companies, Nintendo has history. A lot of it. Having existed for 133 years, there's quite a lot of the past that can inspire the present - and it's always exciting when that happens.
]]>If you’re good enough, you only need 240x160 pixels to scare the s**t out of players. Released alongside the first Metroid Prime in November 2002, Metroid Fusion marked the long-awaited return of Samus Aran to the 2D action-adventure genre. Something had changed beyond the gorgeous new visuals and gameplay improvements though; Fusion was substantially more hair-raising than its predecessors.
]]>A community-created update to PC emulation services has made several classic PlayStation games like Tekken, Bloody Roar, and Rival Schools excellent to play online.
]]>Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is painted with much acclaim from critics and fans alike, but one game before it often gets maligned by fans: Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Tripped up by its controversial own tripping feature and bad online implementation at the time of its release, Brawl deserves more praise: it laid the foundations for Ultimate to succeed. 15 years after its release, I am here to tell you why this maligned entry in one of the most sucessful gaming series of all time deserves more respect.
]]>Welcome to VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast: Episode 31 - the best game that made reminds you of Christmas.
]]>The PS2 is one of the best-selling consoles of all time, and with good reason. Not only was it a convenient DVD player just as the format was taking off, but its incredible library of fantastic PS2 games raised the bar in almost every way from the original PlayStation.
]]>^Stay tuned after the ads for our retrospective on the Assassin’s Creed phenomenon, and how it changed the entire gaming landscape.
]]>It might make you shiver when I tell you that Mario Kart DS is the first way I experienced Mario Kart. I later visited the N64 version and (of course) would go on to frequent the Wii version, too. But Mario Kart DS will always have the most special place in my heart among them all.
]]>It’s a heady responsibility, being labeled as the sequel to Super Mario 64. I mean really, how do you properly follow up the game that more or less invented the 3D platformer genre? Many considered 2002’s Super Mario Sunshine to be just that by simple deductive reasoning. It was the second 3D Mario platformer in the series, so naturally, that makes it a Super Mario 64 sequel, right? For many other Mario fans, though, while the game’s quality was undeniable, they found it a bit… safe. Subdued.
]]>The Mega Drive Mini 2 — a retro collection console featuring plenty of SEGA classics — has just been released to the public. However, there’s more waiting for eager fans of the classics than just a trip down memory lane. Displayed in the staff credits screen of the console shines a memorial message for Rieko Kodama, a longtime producer at SEGA, who recently passed away.
]]>It’s difficult to believe, but today marks ten years since XCOM: Enemy Unknown was first released. A lot has changed in the world of gaming in the ensuing decade — but for my money, Firaxis’ vision of a modern XCOM game remains the best video game franchise reboot there’s ever been.
]]>Lots of pre-release video games suffer the fate of becoming the subject of memes. Assassin’s Creed has come under fire for melting NPC faces, and many a ‘visual downgrade’ has launched campaigns of know-it-all fans to drone on about despicable devs. But one of the funniest of all time is this week turning a decade old: Resident Evil 6’s logo.
]]>It’s now official, and irrefutable: Lego is no longer just for children. This has always been the case, of course, but in recent years the company itself has started to embrace this fact. First there was ‘Creator Expert’, a line of larger, more complicated and expensive sets. Then came adult-driven packaging, signaled by sleek black boxes and a marketing campaign that gleefully declares ‘Adults Welcome’. Like a lot of the best kids’ toys, Lego is for kids first – but is perfectly good for adults, too.
]]>Back in the 16 and 64-bit eras, UK-based developer Rare was exceptionally good at looking at what its then almost-parent Nintendo was doing, then developing their own killer take on it. I mean, seriously, look at the evidence – Diddy Kong Racing gives Mario Kart 64 a run for its money, but is awash with way, way more content. Banjo Kazooie is right up there with Super Mario 64. And one of the great pieces of gaming gossip of the 90s revolves around Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto’s alleged distaste at the wild success of Donkey Kong Country. Rare and Nintendo were on the same side, but were in a quiet sort of rivalry that resulted in some really damn good games.
]]>What a thrill it’s been to see GoldenEye 007 finally revealed to be making a return on Nintendo Switch and Xbox. Sure, it’s been rumored for a long time, but it was still one of the most electrifying announcements on a day that was, thanks to a Nintendo Direct and State of Play, pretty packed full of ‘em.
]]>During today's Nintendo Direct, the Japanese company announced today that Rare is releasing GoldenEye 007 HD on Nintendo Switch and Xbox. The title is a remaster of the cult classic Nintendo 64 title first hit consoles way back in 1997.
]]>Revealed at The Disney and Marvel Games Showcase, Gargoyles will be privy to a remaster way over 10 years since it first released on the SEGA Genesis.
]]>Tekken is a massively popular series: the latest game in the series bypassing 9 million sales in its lifetime is proof enough of that. But as popular as the series is today, there’s something about the early games in the fighting game franchise – Tekken 2 and Tekken 3, specifically – that left their mark in the cultural consciousness in an altogether different way.
]]>Sega may have long since left console manufacturing behind, but the Dreamcast remains one of the longest-lived games consoles going, with fans ever so occasionally putting out new Dreamcast releases. The system has a cult following - the Dreamcast never dies.
]]>Ion Fury is the latest in a long and enjoyable line of boomer shooters I’ve ticked off lately. The two of us were bound to intersect – me, a 36-year-old with a professional sideline in harping on about the ‘90s for gaming sites; Ion Fury, an uncomplicated corridor shooter running on Duke Nukem 3D’s old game engine. I played, I laughed, I rolled sprites of bombs at little cyborg heads on robot spider legs. And then I got to thinking.
]]>Before the Spyro Reignited Trilogy released in 2018, it came to light that series creator Insomniac Games didn’t have any of the trilogy’s original source code. So when there was a complete change of development staff and rights holder for Spyro with Toys For Bob and Activision, you’d think that creating a remastered collection would be an impossible task.
]]>Nintendo’s Switch Online N64 service adds one of the best - but perhaps somewhat underappreciated – racing games on the system this week. Released in the N64’s launch window, Wave Race 64 was as much of a tech demo for Nintendo’s new 64-bit system as Super Mario 64, with the beautiful transparent ocean and realistic waves wowing any gamer who saw it, much like F-Zero’s Mode 7 tour-de-force did a generation before it. Shigeru Miyamoto himself maintains that Wave Race 64’s water uses ‘80% of the N64’s power’ but despite this, the game is more than just a fancy tech demo.
]]>This week, Lego turns 90 years old – an incredible milestone for a little toy company that, at several points in its life, was on the verge of going under. It’s more impressive still that Lego reaches this milestone while one of the biggest toy brands on the planet, recognizable to children everywhere, and all achieved while remaining a private company.
]]>It’s been a bit of an up-and-down year to be a Sonic fan. Sonic Frontiers has looked brilliant and troubled in alternating media drops, and Sonic Origins offered fans the definitive versions of the 2D classics they’ve been clamoring for – except they were riddled with bugs, and weren’t really definitive. But now, Sonic fans have another reason to celebrate: the release of Sonic Triple Trouble… but in a new format.
]]>It was a big weekend over at EVO 2022: as well getting new character announcements for Street Fighter 6, and what appears to be a Tekken 8 teaser, SNK announced that we'll be getting a new entry in the fan-favourite, long-dead Fatal Fury/Garou series, too!
]]>The Analogue Pocket, the gorgeous but expensive modern Game Boy replacement, gets its first major update today – and it’s bringing with it significant new features.
]]>This week marks the 24th birthday of Mission: Impossible. Not the film series, or the 60s and 70s action tv series upon which the film franchise is based – but rather, it’s the anniversary of a little Nintendo 64 classic, a game that, for my money, is one of the greatest examples of spying in video games.
]]>You know when something just ‘breaks’ a memory? Somebody says or does something, and it’s like a bolt of lightning to your brain, unlocking a thought that then feels like it’s been there forever, just unspoken.
]]>I get it. The original Mega Drive/Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy (and Sonic CD, I guess) are some of the most beloved Sonic games of all time. Plus, we’re still coming off the highs of Sonic’s 30th anniversary and the second movie. It makes financial sense for Sega to release these games over and over and over again, especially now with general interest in the franchise higher than it’s been in a while. I can’t deny that I’ve double-dipped on Sonic 1-3 more than my fair share in my 30-plus years as a fan.
]]>This week has delivered yet another episode in the endless headache-inducing drama around video game preservation, as Ubisoft updated the Steam listing for Assassin’s Creed Liberation to announce the game would soon be delisted – prompting anger from preservationists and fans across the internet.
]]>Sonic’s transition to 3D has always been tricky. That 2D to 3D lane change has continued to dog the hedgehog’s releases even into the modern generations (isn't that right, Sonic Forces?) whereas former rival Mario kept soaring beyond galaxies, getting more comfortable with each release.
]]>As game development tasks go, it doesn’t feel unreasonable to say that one of the simplest tasks a major publisher could undertake is to remaster and re-release classic 2D games from the 16-bit era. And yet, somehow, with Sonic Origins, Sega swung and… well, it’s not quite a miss. But it ain’t the home run it should be, either.
]]>It’s impossible to argue that GoldenEye 007, aka GoldenEye 64, is anything less than one of the most important games ever made. But to me, as a James Bond fan, I’ve got just as much time for another GoldenEye 007: the 2010 remake and reimagining of the classic for the Nintendo Wii, later ported to the PS3 and 360.
]]>Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has one of the most classic and notable soundtracks in video game history. But in the latest 'definitive' release of the game, included as one of several games in Sonic Origins, its full and classic music won't be present. And with that confirmation, what was once one of gaming's most enduring pieces of development gossip is confirmed to be at least partially true.
]]>Decades after anything was last seen of the game, a reddit user has appeared online posting all-new video footage of a playable build of SimCopter 64, a long-lost title for Nintendo’s first fully 3D console.
]]>High end all-in-one retro gaming console company Playmaji has teased the latest add-on for its Polymega machine, which will add support for another classic piece of gaming hardware: the Nintendo 64.
]]>It's May 4th! You know what that means – we all have to fall into the horrific trap set by the world's biggest media megacorp and embrace it as Star Wars Day, 'cos May the 4th be with you and all that. And people say Valentines Day is a corporate trick...!
]]>Sonic the Hedgehog is in the middle of something of a renaissance. Sonic Mania was enough to restore anybody’s faith in video games starring super-fast mammals, and now of course we’ve got not one but two different Hollywood movie adaptations that are among the best video game moves ever made. So, it’s an ideal time for Sega to capitalize with some Sonic video game action.
]]>It’s a rare event that only happens once in a blue moon - it’s time for another numbered Street Fighter game. Which means that it's also time for us to theorycraft which characters we all want to see make a return in Street Fighter 6.
]]>Chrono Cross is back. It’s been decades in the making, but one of Square’s most unfortunately maligned titles from its PS1 silver age is now finally getting the treatment it deserves. A bunch of new people are likely about to experience the adventure of Serge and Kid for the first time – and that opens a twenty-year aged can of worms all over again.
]]>Retro gaming is big business. Be it high-end, high-price retro handhelds or mini arcade cabinets, there’s a huge audience and a mint to be made by companies willing to stoke our nostalgia - and one of the market leaders is now taking things to the next level.
]]>The existence of a fourth Matrix movie has awakened something in me. I always knew I liked those movies - yes, even Reloaded and Revolutions, though to a lesser extent than the first - but I never really realized quite how much they meant to me. As somebody who was in their early teens when the sequels released, the Matrix was just about the coolest s**t imaginable. What I’ve realized now is that those movies grabbed me in the same sort of way I imagine Star Wars grabbed kids in the seventies. They are, in a way, my Star Wars.
]]>We are entering a golden age of retro gaming. Modern video games are also pretty good right now, of course, but if you have a love of the old stuff, this is an unprecedented time. Technology, fan interest, and the right clever brains behind-the-scenes are lining up in just the right way to make playing old games as hassle-free as it is nostalgic, and as era-accurate as it is thrilling. The new embodiment of this era? Analogue Pocket, the greatest Game Boy ever made.
]]>The grim reaper slides another bead across on the abacus that is counting down to when she takes me, and you, and everyone else, and time continues to fly and oh god the Nintendo Wii is fifteen years old today.
]]>The new GTA Trilogy: The Definitive Edition rerelease is a chance to revisit some all-time classics - but compared to some other remasters I’ve had the pleasure of playing recently, the original source material is really showing its age.
]]>EGX 2021 kicked off today, and while we're not there in person we did prepare a fun hour-long quiz for everyone to enjoy. You can watch it at EGX on the EGX Live Stage at around 3:30 PM BST today (Thursday), or stream it on the EGX Twitch channel.
]]>Square Enix’s new re-releases of Final Fantasy 1, 2, and 3 are strong efforts, and worthy of your attention. But there’s definitely scope to improve with patches and future ports.
]]>As I wait for the Pixel Remasters to unlock, I desperately try to debuff my expectations.
]]>Sega has conceded that its vague reveal of a new Sonic the Hedgehog game due to launch in 2022 was "a bit premature" in a new interview.
]]>Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster could eventually come to PC and consoles if there's enough demand, a Q&A released by Square Enix has revealed.

]]>Capcom Arcade Stadium is Capcom's latest arcade compilation, and it’s going to make you pay extra if you want to cheat when it lands on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
]]>Title inspired by the likes of Doom and Quake.
]]>It's time to bring back a classic genre.
]]>Nintendo is living up to its promise to remove a few of its titles from sale at the end of March and has issued a tweet warning players to pick up Super Mario 3D All-Stars before March 31.
]]>Forever Entertainment will be working with Square Enix on remakes of "several" titles which will reportedly all be from the same "brand" that the publisher owns. But what could they be?
