The roguelike genre is a type of game that I have, honestly, neglected for most of my life. I know what I I like, after all, and I don’t see a Silent Hill roguelike happening any time soon. Despite having dabbled with The Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, and Downwell, something failed to click with me when it came to roguelikes. I later tried Hades, which appealed to me because of its vibrant visual style and cast of hot Gods and Goddesses, only to find that I didn’t quite gel with it either.
]]>“I was at a point where I didn't know what game to play and Baldur’s Gate 3 came to mind,” modder Hippp0o tells me.
]]>Modders add a lot of cool stuff to their various games of choice, and this might be one of the coolest additions I've seen for any game in a while. A relatively new Baldur's Gate 3 mod casually gives the RPG an entire new mode, which allows you and your party to battle through waves of foes roguelike-style.
]]>Well, Hades 2's second patch is here, and it's a pretty damn beefy one. What's on tap, you ask? Well, revamps of all of Melinoë's nocturnal arms, plenty of tweaks to what Daedalus Hammers do, and some other changes that're also quite interesting.
]]>How to get Moon Dust in Hades 2 is a pretty straightforward process, though actually having the resources to obtain it on hand is another matter. Moon Dust isn’t something you have to worry about initially – since it doesn’t exist in your first few runs – but you’ll need plenty of it once you start facing Hades 2’s tougher challenges.
]]>How to survive on the surface in Hades 2 is a question with a straightforward answer that takes a while to arrive at. You need a bit of luck, a spell, and a really weird looking plant that only comes from Chaos. It’s worth the trouble, though. Even aside from useful resources, there’s a whole other world up there for Melinoe to explore – or die trying.
]]>You. Have you been enjoying Hades 2 so far? Well, just as it's gotten its first big patch, one that features tweaks to mechanics like sprinting and resource gathering, Supergiant creative director Greg Kasavin has offered a bit of info on where the game's headed. Apparently, there are some "clues" as to what the developer may have in store for future updates already out there to find.
]]>Hades 2 Thalamus is a tough plant to get, but it’s one of the most important items to get as soon as you can. You’ll need it to survive in the game’s other big location, which, if the early access version’s final boss fight is anything to go by, will eventually play a pretty big role.
]]>How to break the wards and reach the surface in Hades 2 is something Supergiant’s roguelike game is happy to let you guess at until the time is right. Even then, you’ll need to complete a small handful of steps and wait a little while before Melinoe can finally step out of the hells and into metaphorical sunlight.
]]>It might sound like a bit of an oxymoron, but the worst part about the original Hades is that it ended. A roguelite, with an ending? Ok, sure, you can keep doing runs as often as you like, but narratively everything just kind of ties itself up after you successfully do enough of them. I do really enjoy a good roguelike (or -lite), but I'm not someone that can play them forever - part of Hades' appeal is the way it builds its narrative. Back when I finished it, there was one thing I was hoping Supergiant would do as DLC, or perhaps an update, but it never materialised. But lucky me, though, as they've only gone and put it in Hades 2 instead.
]]>Hades 2 has quickly proven popular, and it's clearly gotten people in the mood for the original, as the 2020 roguelite has also seen a strong boost on Steam.
]]>How to get bronze in Hades 2 is a bit of a process, as it’s one of the few materials in Supergiant’s roguelike game that you can’t actually find in the Underworld. You’ll need to progress a fair bit – or, if not make real progress, at least just have a lot of runs under your belt. If you want to cast a line in the grim waters of the Underworld, though, it’s worth the trouble.
]]>The first challenge involved in getting Hades 2 G Rock is figuring out what the heck G Rock even is. The early access version of Supergiant’s roguelike game abbreviates certain material names to save space, and the resulting names aren’t exactly easy to parse.
]]>If you're anything like me, you probably only started playing the first Hades when it received its full 1.0 launch towards the end of 2020. I'd seen it around, sure, and was generally aware of Supergiant Games' works given how praised titles like Transistor were, but my first experience with the studio's games was with Hades. Like everyone else under the sun, I was immediately hooked - hot gods, tight rogue-lite combat, a killer soundtrack, a compelling narrative/ gameplay loop, did I mention some really hot gods? It had it all!
]]>If fighting through the same dungeons over-and-over, inching through the stygian halls of Tartarus, magma-singed islands of Ashphodel and raging battlegrounds of Elysium in a quest for freedom sounds like something of a Sisyphean task: it is.

]]>The best cyberpunk games let you explore gorgeous, futuristic worlds, but you’re not supposed to like it. Coalescing in the hyper-capitalist ‘80s with the likes of Blade Runner, Robocop, Akira and Neuromancer, the Cyberpunk genre has its fibre-optic roots in similarly prophetic works from as far back as the ‘60s, including the original 1968 Phillip K. Dick short story, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, that Blade Runner is based on.
]]>Despite launching way back in 2020, it was arguably 2023 when the PS5 finally came into its own.
